Savannah is renowned for being called home to some of the friendliest people in the world. Its laid-back atmosphere and positioning close to the beach make it the ideal spot for a short holiday or even a long-term stay with the family. As you make your way through the city, be sure to visit the Savannah construction precinct (also known as the historic district), which is famous for its incredible architecture and buildings. The community is relatively crime free, with low figures for burglaries and violent acts in comparison with other cities within Georgia, and indeed other states in the Unites States of America. It is generally a peaceful place to live, where residents can leave their doors open and their cars unlocked and not be concerned about the problems that other towns all around the world face on a daily basis. The media is well developed, with cable television providing all of the essential TV networks, with FOX, ABC, NBC, CBS, MTV, and CW. In printed form, the Savannah Morning News and the Savannah Tribute are daily and weekly (respectively) newspapers that are available for Savannah residents and tourists.
If culture is your thing, then you cannot go past the rich and developing performing arts scene in Savannah. The Savannah Dance Theatre was established in 1998 and has grown to become the city's largest dance company. Well known for performing traditional theatre classics as well as original works, they play in the down-town Lucas Theatre, which is, like everything else in the city, open for daily tours for tourists. There is also the Coastal Jazz Association, which hosts the Annual Jazz Festival, and presents the children of Savannah the chance to learn and dance with contemporary jazz themes. There is also the Savannah College of Art and Design, which attracts around 7000 students every year, and is devoted solely to the visual and performing arts, design and the history of art and architecture. Students flock from all over the United States, and in fact, up to 80 countries all over the world; such is the appreciation for this College. The Savannah Film Festival is also something to look out for if you intend to travel to Savannah in late October or early November. The festival features more than fifty films, selected from more than 600 entries, submitted by students all over the world. The screenings feature a range of styles, including features, short films, animated films, documentary, and student competitions. The festival also provides students with the opportunity of completing workshops and talking to expert cinematographers to improve their skills and gain further information about the profession.
