Tybee Island is a popular tourist destination, with hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and is also loved by the locals who choose to live near the beautiful beaches. Located just 20 minutes by car or bus from the town of Savannah, Georgia, the Islands are very accessible and easy to get to all year around, whether you are just coming for a day and staying at a Savannah bed and breakfast, or you are coming to live for a little longer. Although there are many islands that surround Savannah, the Tybee Islands are far and away the most popular. By offering amazing fishing experiences, incredible sunrises and sunsets, clean and pure sand, as well as warm, fresh waves and water, the Savannah Islands and in particular, Tybee Island really is one of the United States of America's most picturesque places.
Derived from the Native American name for 'salt' - Tybee has been known as such since the 1700's where it was discovered by French and British settlements. Many famous battles were fought on the shores of the beach, including the Revolutionary War and the American Civil War. It is perhaps for this reason that the Savannah Tybee Island is such a popular destination. Americans traditionally love their history and are very patriotic about it. Learning about your ancestors is something that is very appealing for Americans, and Tybee Island and indeed the Savannah Islands provide such a rich insight into the past.
The Tybee Museum in a famous destination and is open every day (except Tuesday's) from 9.00AM to 5.30PM. Located off US-80 highway at the 1898 coastal Georgia artillery battery station at Fort Screven, the site also hosts the famous Light Station. The Tybee Island Light Station is one of America's most intact buildings, having been carefully rebuilt several times and carefully monitored by some of America's leading architects. Under the watchful eye of the Light Station Keeper, Cullen Chambers, one can visit the Station and take the popular tour. The lighthouse has recently been renovated, in which great attention to detail has been taken. Years of decay and modernisations have been stripped away and the lighthouse can now be seen in its original condition, just in the same way that your fathers and your father's fathers would have seen it.
There really is so much to do on the beautiful Savannah Tybee Islands. If fishing is your vice, there are plentiful tours available, or you can take your own rod down to any of the piers and try your luck at some famous Tybee Whiting! If you are not in the mood for fishing for your dinner, you can always go to one of the amazing coastal restaurants that are available. You'll find that although most of the restaurants have a casual, relaxed family friendly atmosphere, there are also some more expensive, luxurious dining restaurants on the island. Most restaurants have water views and are capable of providing outdoor seating in the warmer months. Even if you don't like seafood - that is fine too, with restaurants generally offering anything from American, Caribbean, Southern, Mexican and Italian cuisine. Tybee Island provides a nice change from the typical Savannah Downtown restaurants that can be found in the city centre. Like the restaurants, Tybee Island's nightlife is simply stunning. It varies from smaller, relaxed bars with basic live entertainment to some faster-paced night-clubs with top disc jockeys playing all the latest hits. There are plenty of great shopping options too - whether you are after memorabilia, clothes, or just groceries for dinner there is a grand plethora of options available for you. Be sure to retire back to a relaxed Savannah bed and breakfast when you are done!
Unlike most coastal destinations, do not feel as though you can only come and visit the beautiful Savannah Tybee Island during the warmer months. Although located much closer to the beaches and the water, the temperatures are generally similar to those that are expected throughout Georgia and other more humid locations. If you intend to come over the Christmas break, do not miss the annual lighting of the Tybee Christmas Tree on December 11 and the Christmas Parade the following day. There are of course, New Years Eve Fireworks, which you can watch from the beach or from the veranda of your favourite restaurant. However, if you would rather come during the warmer months don't miss the Tybee 500 Sailing Race which starts on May 11th and the exciting Beach Bum Parade on May 15th. September sees the Labor Day Beach Bash and also the famous Savannah Jazz Festival. There really is something for everybody at the incredible Savannah Tybee Island.
